Preparing your items
for recycling should not be a burden. There's often no need to scrub
out containers or go to much fuss other than a simple rinse. Some
items need no preparation whatsoever and can go in the bins as is.
Proper preparation of the materials lowers the risk of contamination
in the recycling process. Remember, it's still trash if it is not
cleaned and prepared properly.
Newspapers
Dry and clean only. Put in bins loose - no bags or
string to bind them.
Magazines
Dry and clean only. Put in bins loose - no bags or string to bind
them.
Corrugated Cardboard
Dry and clean only. Flatten boxes to insert into bins. Discard any
box fillers (packing paper, foam peanuts, etc.).
Metal Cans
Rinse all liquid or food out of cans. Crush to save
more space. No need to remove the labels.
#1 and #2 Plastic
Bottles, Jugs and Jars
Remove caps or lids, discard. Rinse liquid or food
out of containers. Crush to save more space. No need to remove the
labels.
In
the warmer months, food left in the containers can attract rodents
and other pests. Bees like to build nests in bins that contain the
syrup from un-rinsed soda containers. Nobody wants to risk getting
stung in order to recycle, and our drivers aren't much for getting
stung either! Please properly clean your recyclables before putting
them in the bins. Thank you!
