Electronics Recycling at CCSWA

EZ Navigator - Recycle Main >>> Electronics Recycling

Electronics recycling at the CCSWA is one of our most popular special collections. Many electronic devices are not accepted at local landfills, leaving recycling the only option. The Solid Waste Authority provides recycling service for electronics at our office in Ebensburg during business hours of Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm. See below for a list of accepted items and to learn more about the history of electronics recycling in Cambria County.

Effective January 4, 2007:

A new price schedule for recycling electronics has been established. The fee structure was placed to offset the costs of the program.

Drop-off of electronics is limited to the Authority's
business hours of Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm only.
No after-hours drop-offs are accepted.
After-hours or unsupervised drop-offs will be
considered illegal dumping.

This collection is open to all residents of Cambria County. If you need more information or are unsure of the pricing structure, please contact us prior to bringing equipment.

The History of Electronics Recycling in Cambria County

In late November, 2003, the Cambria County Solid Waste Authority held it's first Computer and Electronics Recycling event behind the Authority office in Ebensburg. The Authority collected various electronic items including computers, printers, monitors, televisions, radios, CD players, 8-track players, record players, telephones, electric can openers, etc.

Many Cambria County residents commented that the event was a great idea. Not only were they able to get rid of those old, out-dated computers and floor model televisions sitting around the house, but it also gave them the peace of mind that the electronics were going to be put to good use. They were happy to pay the small fee involved to offset the cost of shipping the used electronics.

Envirocycle of Hallstead, PA completely disassembles all of the items for their components and process them to make new electronics. Glass from televisions and monitors will be crushed and recycled into new glass picture tubes. Over 32,000 lbs. of electronics were collected during the first 2-day event.

Safety and Security at the Solid Waste Authority

In this day and age, there are a lot of people concerned with privacy. At the Solid Waste Authority, we are just as concerned for our patrons. When computers are dropped off at the Authority for recycling, we lock up the towers (containing the hard drive) so that they are not accessible by anyone outside of the Authority's employees. Our employees are bonded, meaning that we will not look up any information on a donated computer for any purpose.

Once picked up by Envirocycle, Inc., the hard drives are immediately removed and put onto a "disassembly" line to have a hole drilled through them - rendering them completely useless and the data unrecoverable.

With our recycling program, your safety is our #1 concern. Even if you have removed the hard drive, wiped it clean, and have drilled your own holes through it, we'll take it for collection anyway!!

For Businesses Who Wish to Recycle...

Although our program is set up to be free to the general public, our funding only runs so far. Businesses who wish to recycle must contact the Authority before bringing equipment to us. Storage space at the Authority is very limited and we cannot accept large amounts at any time. We will coordinate a date with you when a truck from Envirocycle will be at our office to pick up our equipment. On that date, you must obtain a weigh-slip for your equipment. We can recommend a few weigh-stations en route that will help you.

The Authority does charge for material brought by businesses for recycling. A flat fee of 15 cents per pound will be assessed according to your weigh slip. This fee is the same that we pay for our electronics recycling; we do not profit from your electronics recycling. You may bring a check with you when you drop off materials, or we can send you an invoice for the materials.
