Pennsylvania
Act 101, also known as the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling, and
Waste Reduction Act of 1988, encompasses many issues. It is a mandate
for curbside recycling in the Commonwealth's larger communities that
makes it most noteworthy. The law provides for extensive grant funding
to establish programs, provide for education outreach, and offer incentives
for the marketing of recyclables. The Act also required counties to
plan for long term waste disposal capacity. While Act 101 is the most
far reaching legislation, it is not the only law impacting waste issues
in Pennsylvania.
